Is this a Genealogy site? No. Genealogy is the study or investigation of ancestry and family histories. This website is all about you, your history, your memories and what has made your life unique. There is a very simple form to help you record details about your family and friends and these details will appear in your story. You can also print a Family and Friends summary report that lists the details - as a supplement to your story. People who study family history particularly like using this site because it compliments genealogy. Top How long does it take to record my Life Story? It will probably take many hours to write your story up to a point where you can say it is ‘finished’. Most people write in small chunks - about an hour at a time over several months. You have to be in the right frame of mind to sit down and start recording your memories, which is why your subscription lasts a whole year. The website makes the job a whole lot easier and you can come back as many times as you like and pick up where you stopped. Of course, we hope you continue to build your story as each year passes, so telling your story becomes a ‘work in progress’. Top How private is my information? Nobody can sign-in to your account without knowing both your unique member number and your password. During the registration process the website will issue you with a temporary password that you should change the first time you sign-in. It is therefore very important to choose a password that is not easy for others to guess and to keep your member number and password safe. Top What happens when my subscription runs out? After 12 months, if you don’t re-subscribe, your subscription will expire and your account will be suspended. When you try to sign-in, you will be invited to re-subscribe. You will be able to re-subscribe any time for a period of 12 months following the expiry date of your account. After an account has been suspended for 12 months the account will be deleted. If, in the future you decide to re-subscribe we may be able to restore your data from backup, but we would probably charge a fee for this service. Top How will I know when new events are recorded? The best way to find out about new events and services is to subscribe to our monthly newsletter. Top Can I print my Life Story? Yes. Whilst the website provides a great framework to create your story and we hope writing your story will be a rewarding experience in itself, we always assume you will eventually want to print a hard copy. The website provides a ‘Printer Friendly Version’ of your story that you can print directly to your own printer. If you want to, you can copy your entire story from your web browser and paste it into another application such as Microsoft Word, where you can then easily change the format and page layout to suit your individual taste. Top I have already started writing my memoirs. Can I import my stories? Yes. Copying text from another Windows application is very easy. You can copy and paste straight into the website. Your story will immediately appear in the framework that we provide. You can then add more events to build your story. Top Can I add photographs to my Life Story? The web site currently supports only text, however it is very easy to copy your story from your web browser and paste it into another application such as Microsoft Word. You can then easily insert photographs. Top How much does it cost? The cost of a 12-month subscription is NZD $25.00 and the cost to re-subscribe is the same price, NZD $25.00 for another 12 months. We don't offer a discount for re-subscribing because stories get longer over time, not shorter. You have to be connected to the Internet to use the website so you may also have to consider the cost of your connection time, depending on your plan and how much you currently use the Internet. Most people write their stories in small chunks over many months, which is well suited to most members who use dial-up access plans that are based on limited hours per month. Top Do I have to be connected to the Internet whenever I use the website? Yes. You have to be connected to the Internet to use the website, but you can write some of your story using another application - if you want to. For example, you can write some of the longer time-consuming parts of your story using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word and then copy and paste the text into the website. Top Can I give a Life Story as a gift? Yes. Simply subscribe to the service but do not sign-in. The first time someone signs-in they are prompted to supply some required information such as their name and date of birth. Until that information is provided, the account is not active and will not expire. In other words, the expiry clock does not start ticking until someone signs-in. So you can purchase a subscription and record the Member number and temporary password. Simply give these to someone else as a gift subscription. Top Is it safe to use my credit card to purchase a subscription online? Yes. Some people will be very wary about using a credit card to pay online, especially for a subscription that is in a foreign currency! However, in this case you can be absolutely confident that the payment system is secure. Just about any bank employee will tell you that a secure online payment facility is safer than writing a cheque. Our payment gateway is secure (128-bit encrypted) and can be trusted.
